Photographer Guidelines

At Beyond the Gate Wildlife Photography, our goal is to provide an enjoyable, safe, and respectful experience for every guest while helping preserve the wildlife and working ranches that make these opportunities possible. Following these guidelines helps ensure a successful visit for both photographers and landowners.

Recommended Equipment

You don't need the most expensive camera to enjoy wildlife photography, but having the right equipment will improve your experience.

Recommended Camera Equipment

  • DSLR or Mirrorless camera

  • Telephoto lens (200–600mm recommended)

  • Mid-range zoom lens (24–105mm or similar)

  • Wide-angle lens for landscapes and ranch scenery

  • Extra batteries

  • Empty memory cards

  • Lens cleaning cloth

  • Rain cover for camera (recommended)

Optional equipment:

  • Monopod

  • Bean bag or window mount

  • Lightweight tripod (where permitted)

  • Binoculars

  • Camera backpack

Clothing

South Texas weather can change quickly. Dress comfortably and appropriately for the season.

Recommended clothing:

  • Neutral earth-tone colors

  • Long-sleeve lightweight shirts

  • Long pants

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes or hiking boots

  • Hat with brim

  • Lightweight jacket during cooler months

  • Rain jacket during wet weather

Please avoid bright colors or reflective clothing that may disturb wildlife.

Weather Preparation

Texas weather can include:

  • Heat

  • Humidity

  • Wind

  • Rain

  • Sudden temperature changes

Guests should check the forecast before arrival and be prepared for changing conditions.

Insect Protection

Depending on the season, mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and other insects may be present.

We recommend bringing:

  • Insect repellent

  • Sunscreen

  • Lip balm

  • Personal medications if needed

Stay Hydrated

Bring plenty of drinking water, especially during warmer months.

We also recommend:

  • Electrolyte drinks

  • Light snacks

  • Cooling towel during summer

Hydration is essential for a safe and enjoyable photography experience.

Flash Photography

To minimize disturbance to wildlife:

  • Flash photography is generally not permitted during wildlife sessions unless specifically authorized by the ranch or guide.

  • Please respect any additional restrictions that apply to sensitive species or nesting areas.

Noise & Respect for Wildlife

Wildlife photography depends on patience and quiet observation.

Please:

  • Speak softly

  • Silence mobile phones

  • Avoid unnecessary movement

  • Do not play music or audio

  • Never attempt to attract wildlife using recorded sounds unless expressly permitted by the ranch

Respecting wildlife creates better photographic opportunities for everyone.

Photography Blind Etiquette

Photography blinds are designed to minimize disturbance and maximize wildlife viewing.

While using a blind:

  • Arrive on time

  • Enter and exit quietly

  • Keep conversations to a minimum

  • Avoid sudden movements

  • Keep equipment organized

  • Respect shared space

  • Leave the blind clean for the next guests

  • Do not feed or approach wildlife

Patience is one of the most valuable tools in wildlife photography.

Image Rights

Photographers retain ownership of the photographs they personally capture during their visit.

By participating, guests understand that:

  • Beyond the Gate and participating ranches may request permission to feature selected images for promotional purposes.

  • No images will be used commercially without the photographer's consent unless otherwise agreed in writing.

  • Photographers are encouraged to credit the ranch when sharing images on social media or in publications.

Drone Policy

To protect wildlife, livestock, neighboring properties, and guest privacy:

  • Personal drones are not permitted unless prior written approval has been granted by the ranch.

  • Drone use must comply with all applicable FAA regulations and any additional ranch-specific rules.

Unauthorized drone flights may result in immediate removal from the property without refund.

Alcohol, Smoking & Controlled Substances

For the safety of all guests and respect for private ranch property:

  • No illegal drugs are permitted.

  • Alcohol consumption is prohibited during guided photography activities unless specifically authorized as part of a private event.

  • Smoking and vaping are permitted only in designated areas approved by the ranch.

  • Never smoke near dry vegetation, wildlife habitats, feed, or ranch equipment due to fire risk.

Arrival Procedures

To help ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit:

  • Arrive at the designated meeting location 15–30 minutes before your scheduled session.

  • Check in with your ranch host or guide upon arrival.

  • Have your reservation confirmation readily available.

  • Follow all parking instructions.

  • Exact ranch directions and access information are provided only after your reservation has been confirmed to protect the privacy of participating landowners.

Please allow enough travel time, as many ranches are located in rural areas where GPS navigation may be limited.

Respect the Ranch

Every participating ranch is a privately owned working property. By visiting, you agree to:

  • Follow all ranch rules and staff instructions.

  • Stay only in designated areas unless accompanied by a guide.

  • Respect livestock, wildlife, fences, gates, equipment, and private facilities.

  • Leave no trace by taking all personal belongings and trash with you.

  • Help preserve these special places so future photographers can enjoy them as well.
